LASER SHOW SCANNERS AND ACTUATORS

The heart of the laser show system is the laser itself, but the laser would be fairly useless without some way to position the laser beam at high speed.

The laser show industry uses a device technically called a galvanometer (Galvo or scanner for short), these look like motors with a mirror mounted on the motor shaft, the motor shaft angle of rotation is limited usual to about 40 degrees and its position controlled by a voltage.

There are many scanner manufacturers, we use three in our equipment, one is produced by General scanning of USA the second Cambridge Technology also of the USA and a third one produced in Europe called LM. The LM scanner is making a big impact in the market due to far lower cost while being equal in performance. Another benefit of the LM scanner is its ability to use larger mirrors compared to the GS or CT scanners.

Just like the laser and scanner, the scanner is also useless without some other material such as a scanner mounting unit, driver/amplifier and power supply. For a typical laser show configuration you need two laser scanners one for X and one for Y mounted in a scanner block (the scanner block usually made from a block of machined metal helps to cool the scanners and also align them correcly). You also need two driver amplifiers, one power supply and some form of controller. Controllers are discussed further on the laser shows software page here
